The hybrid working model has become increasingly popular in the past two years, especially in the IT industry. As per the report, titled ‘Shaping the Future of Work in India’s Tech Industry’ by NASSCOM, over 80% of IT companies and GCCs are most likely to adopt a hybrid work model as compared to other industries.

Today’s workplace environment is centred around flexibility, and employees without it remain at a strong risk of attrition. Companies looking to build productive, successful teams need to think about how they provide flexibility not only in where but also when people work. The office remains an important anchor for employees, but the primary purpose of office space is shifting. Two-thirds of employees (66%) say they prefer a hybrid arrangement with the option to access a physical space, as per the Pulse survey.

A hybrid work model offers the best of both worlds: the structure and social aspects of interacting face to face with coworkers and the convenience and flexibility of working remotely. It allows employees to work virtually part-time while still requiring some in-office presence. Some companies have designated specific days that employees must be in the office for meetings and collaboration, allowing them to choose where they want to work the rest of the week. While being in the office is useful for orientations, team-building activities, important client meetings or new project kickoffs, remote days might be better for creative deep dives or tasks involving a lot of focus.

How companies can create an always-connected work environment?

As hybrid workplaces become the norm, maintaining employee satisfaction and an always-connected positive culture is more important than ever. With employees increasingly wanting to choose when and where they work, the HQ has become digital and the place to bring entire organisations together to collaborate and solve problems.

A digital HQ is a single, virtual space to connect your people, tools, customers and partners for faster and more flexible work. When teams have the tools that they need to be their most efficient and productive, the whole organisation can focus on what matters most: delivering quality products and services.

A digital HQ boosts productivity by streamlining communication across the entire organisation. Instead of one-off email chains, all your communication is organised into channels that are easy to create, join and search. When there’s a channel for everything going on at your company, everyone knows where to find the information that they need. No more wasting time digging for that one email in your inbox.

Tips for techies to maintain/boost productivity?

  • Organise everything: It’s essential to impose a sense of order in what can sometimes be a chaotic workplace. Project management tools can be integrated into Slack and used to build out projects and connect other users to task lists to contribute and collaborate. Having a platform that allows you to delegate also saves plenty of time and brainpower by eliminating administrative back-and-forth with colleagues.
  • Dedicate time for deep focus: Techies need lots of flow time to complete their work, while managers are more schedule-driven; this can easily lead to a clash of interests or loss of productivity. Having no meeting days where you can focus on tasks that require deep thinking is important to completely immerse yourself in important projects.
  • Think inside the box: Timeboxing or time blocking-deciding how long each task should take and reserving time in your calendar to do it — is an effective strategy, because it helps you concentrate fully on the task at hand. The Pomodoro Technique has been boosting productivity for decades, and it calls for nothing more than a kitchen timer set to 25 minutes.
  • Remember your internal clock is just as important as your timer: People are naturally predisposed to be productive at different times of day. Time-of-day affects people’s cognitive abilities and identifying your preferences will help you be more productive in the long run.
